Do I need to be an athlete to see a sports therapist?
No, you don't need to be an athlete, and you don't need to exercise regularly to benefit from Sports Therapy sessions. Sports therapy is effective for anyone experiencing muscle pain, joint stiffness, chronic issues, or occupational injuries. Yes, I treat sporty people, but many of my patients do not consider themselves sporty and will still benefit from their sessions!
Where is the Sports Therapy clinic, and is there parking?
The clinic is located in Hove, easily accessible from Brighton and surrounding Sussex areas. It is less than a 10 minute walk from Hove train station, and served by multiple city bus routes. Pay and display street parking is available on The Drive itself, and all surrounding roads."
What should I wear?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothing.
For lower limb assessments, shorts are ideal. For upper body injuries, a t-shirt or vest top allows easy assessment.
Clothing such as sports shorts, cycling shorts, sports bras, and vest tops are all suitable.

What should I expect during my first visit?
Your initial session includes an evaluation and assessment to find the root cause of your pain or to assess your scar site fully (depending on booked treatment). A medical questionnaire is completed either during this first session or online beforehand. We will then discuss a personalised treatment plan, which may include manual therapy, sports massage, scar work therapy, treat the presenting signs & symptoms and rehabilitation exercises or home care advise is offered post-hands on treatment, if appropriate.
What does a typical treatment with Kirsty involve?
Treatments call on a combination of Soft Tissue Massage, Fascial Work, Trigger Point Therapy , Muscle Energy techniques and Manual Therapy (joint/spinal mobilisation), as well as Kinesiology Taping, Medical Acupuncture, IASTM &/or ScarWork when clinically appropriate.
A consultation covering medical history is gathered remotely prior to the appointment, and an Evaluation and Assessment may be required in the first session, where movement/mobility may be looked at further. (Please wear shorts / vest tops / sports bras to feel more comfortable if an assessment will be required). This is why additional time is allocated for the initial consultation appointments, so that time is not lost from "hands on" treatment.
Home care exercises may also given when appropriate, to enhance recovery through exercise therapy. Patients are given access to an on-line platform to support them with this, if is it required, and there is no additional cost involved. Please be compliant with home exercise plans - this is where the real difference is made, and where treatment outcomes are consolidated into lasting results.
I will always support sign-posting to other professionals when appropriate, and refer on to GP's / medical services when appropriate or required.

What is Scar Work Therapy?
Any Scar can be treated, old or new! Scarwork sessions require a consultation where a full history will be taken, and during the initial consultation, this is discussed in detail and the scar assessed. Treatments cannot start until around 10 weeks post-surgery and not until the scar is well-healed. Complex scars or new scars may need to wait for medical follow-up appointments to be completed before treatment commences. Please call to discuss these timeframes if unsure. Scarwork sessions can be standalone, or may incorporate global Soft Tissue work and suggested home exercises, depending on individual case presentation. Indeed, some "sports therapy" sessions may include scarwork if it is felt that any scars are impacting on the current presentation
What is the TMJ?
The TMJ stands for the Temporomandibular Joint - or the Jaw. The jaw is the only moveable joint of the Face, attaching the lower jawbone to the skull, and there are 2 - one on each side, which act as a hinge joint to allow you to talk, chew and yawn. Because these joints are complex and constantly in use, problems can develop. TMD is the medical term for jaw joint pain, and stands for Temporomandibular Disorder. Manual therapy is one treatment modality advised for the management of TMD and is offered as part of the TMJ & Craniofacial treatment offering.
